Jim Kirby farms cabbage, snap beans, grain crops, apples and tart cherries in Albion. Farm Credit financial service specialists Katie Merrill and Pat Copeland provide Jim with weekly payroll service. Jim shared his experience with Financial Partner magazine:

“I started making payments on my first farm in my late teens. After high school I became a full-time farmer. I slowly bought more ground and updated equipment. I have used [Farm Credit’s] Agrifax® records for many years but took care of payroll myself until two years ago.

I came close to some pretty big fines and penalties that would cost more than the price of payroll service. Now, Katie takes care of all my payroll tax deposits and makes sure my tax reports are done on time.

I could take the time but my crops would suffer and payroll is something I don’t like doing. Plus, I am a hands-on farmer. I think the workers like me out there and everyone seems to pick up the pace. For payroll, I just call in the hours to Katie or Pat and sign the statement and checks when they arrive in the mail. It is a good move for me.”
