Heifer grower John Karszes (r) and Farm Credit’s Greg Bouchard and Rita Mark.
John Karszes owns a custom heifer-raising business in Stanley, New York. The operation includes barn capacity for 1,500 heifers and 1,200 crop acres. Farm Credit’s Greg Bouchard and Rita Mark provide John with tax and payroll support to run his business. John shared his experience with Financial Partner magazine:

“Greg Bouchard has prepared my taxes since I moved here in 1989. We meet each October to review year-to-date results, projections and potential capital investment decisions. Greg is the best at what he does. When the tax return is done, I know we have taken advantage of everything we can. I have never had any surprises on March 1.

“I have always taken care of farm records myself to stay close to my business. But, I called [Farm Credit’s] Rita Mark for payroll when I hired my first employee. If a payroll tax issue comes up, the best part is that I just fax it to Rita. She is a professional. If there is something I need to do, Rita puts it in the weekly payroll.

“My taxes and payroll are done correctly -and I don’t spend a lot of time on them. That helps me run a better business.”

“This year, John made his standard tax planning visit in early November. With up-to-date records he reviewed three tax-planning scenarios with me. I always have some leisure to decide what investments or prepays are right for my business. This year, I bought a new truck. I knew exactly how much it would impact my tax situation. That’s what I appreciate.”
